Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Jam Questions

I was reading mcglone's response to the best Dark Star(Live Dead) and one section talked about some named jams. I am familiar with the Mind Left Body Jams. I have the Close Encounters, but maybe that one doesn't qualify because they did it only once? Does anyone have a list of all the named jams and examples? Thanks.

check out 09-19-1970 Not fade Away for the fiery Darkness Darkness China Cat Sunflower jam inserted into the jam...coincidentally Garcia tears through the China Cat riff that is Bobby's signature riff...this was actually a Garcia conceived lick that Bobby took over...

Spanish Jam is a very common jam, check out 02-11-1970 for the most revered example...(with Duane Allman)

I have heard of something called the "two soldiers" jam. can't say I would recognize it if I heard it. Also, the DP series names things like, Boston Clam jam and No MSG Jam. Not sure if these are official titles or something just to label for the disc.

mind left body and mud love buddy are one in the same. it was retitled mud love buddy, to avoid potential copyright issues with a label. see paul kantner's, your mind has left your body.

ok - now i am confused. i always thought that (more of less) the mind left mody jams were the china-rider segue's that sounded kinda similar. the march 90 knickerbocker arena Terrapin outro jam was called the mud love buddy jam on the cd which sounded nothing like the mind left jams.

i know i'm probably being stupid, but did it matter that the jams sounded nothing alike?? i guess im not quite sure how to phrase my question, but i am kinda mixed up on the jam phraseology in this case.

Dire- I believe you are correct with great examples on DP12 and the Bonus Songs disc from The Grateful Dead movie DVD, both of them listing Mind Left Body Jam.

from what i've hammered out this morning (and we'll use DP 12 as an example),

uncle johns band jam - china>ujb jam>rider

mind left body jam - WRS>jam>(5:00 mark) mlb begins.

make sense?

i think this is even getting more confusing to my poor brain between what you and ksantilli are saying - lol. i'm gonna have to look into this further tonight too.

still gotta pull out that mud love buddy jam to check out that chord progression - very curious if it is similar to those china rider segue jam chord progressions from the early 70's.

think 10-19-73/ DP 19 dark star, about two minutes out of the verse a classic mlb progression begins. another popular example, 7-31-74 out of truckin', but before the spanish jam.

here's a better breakdown of it's history.

This origin of this jam has long been unknown. The current name given to it
is a reference to "You Mind has Left Your Body," a song from an obscure and
I believe out-of-print album by the Jefferson Airplane. However, it is a
basic and not very original chord progression and does not need to be
derivative of any source. It's very likely that Weir came up with the chords
during a jam. However, if I may suggest an alternative source, these chords
are the same as the intro to the Paul McCartney song "Man We Was Lonely" off
his first solo album, 1970's "McCartney." On this same album is another
song the Dead would play years later, "That Would Be Something," so we can be sure that Garcia was familiar with the album.

hmmm - maybe that mud from the terrapin i'm thinking of actually does sound like the mlb jams from the early 70's then. just at a much much slower pace. can't quite hear it accurately in my mind. will have to pull that out to see if it is a similar chord progression. if it is, ive learned something new today :)

they certainly have the same initials anyways

thanks ian

arrggg! i just googled DP's 12 and the dead's own merch page refers to the jam between china and rider as mind left body as they do the four chord progression i was speaking of earlier. how very dead of them eh? lol btw, i refer to the china/rider jam as dancing happy snoopy on his roof!

purple gel? midnight sun? dr? earl b?

anyway, i've got to run. jess is due home any minute and it's her 30th. she's pretty forgiving, but i doubt she'll understand my ignoring her tonight in lew of this great debate.

have a good weekend man.

ian

Baron Von Tollbooth & The Chrome Nun, Paul Kantner / Grace Slick / David Freiberg, 1973

Now you can sing along (yippie!)

Lyrics & Music: Paul Kantner
You have left your body be aware if you care
Your mind has left your body and for this one moment you are
Under the polar ice cap in a place we call home
How is it there white bear like that where you grow...
Now all of you come back to here and now elsewhere to there
Move on out the other way where...
Do you find yourself floating growing there
chorus
Riders of the rainbow
Let it grow let it grow
You can exercise your mind on where you want to go
And y'can see the city lights flashin' two thousand miles below you
You can feel the sands of Zanzibar or pierce the nearest sun
Find out what and who you are and if you need to run
chorus
Riders of the rainbow
Let it grow let it grow
There is one moment in your life and it can come at any time
And you remember all of what went on from the instant you were born
Thru your early years
And if you can fasten on that moment and expand thru the afterglow
You can reverse your mind in time and travel back to when
The earth was formed
The sky was born
And the universe began
chorus
Riders of the rainbow
Let it grow let it grow
You have left your body
Return when you may
Save it for another day... beyond you

I think you can see why only the music was used!

Jerry, Hart, and Hunter are both guest musicians on the disc.
Yes, it pretty much sucks. The usual Kantner spaceman dribble.

Your Mind Has Left Your Body;
Paul Kantner - 12 string guitar, vocals
Grace Slick - piano, vocals
David Freiberg - keyboards, vocals
Jerry Garcia - steel guitar
John Barbata - drums
Jack Casady - bass
Mickey Hart - gongs, water phones
Jorma Kaukonen - lead guitar

water phones?

I think the powers that be were fucking with us when then changed the name, just as "Spanish Jam" became "Spinich Jam." Somehow, I can't see Paul Kantner having a hissy fit about a jam based on a melody of his carried that name.

Sucks ?
Oh, the shame. I actually liked that song, and several of the others.
The horrible irony..... after 32 years of listening to the vinyl, I upgraded to the CD just last year.
Guess I'd better pitch 'em.

I dont know if it was cleared up.. but MLB jam is the 4 chord progression, and in the grateful dead movie, it goes OTherOne then segues into Spanish Jam.. then goes into MLB jam. So the MLB is a kinda lingering maybe somber jam. Actually in the extra footage on the China>Rider they do MLB and Feelin Groovy.. i *think*. My brains warped oh well

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that Phil (or Bobby) once said that the Mind Left Body Jam wasn't (consciously) based on anything. "It was just a chord progression we came up with."

unfortunately i can't remember where I read that.

i came across this yesterday at phish.net...

"Phil Lesh has stated repeatedly and with great emphasis that the "jam that has been called Mind Left Body" is no such thing, and bears no conscious influence whatsoever from the BvTB song which Deadheads have named it after. The "Mud Love Buddy" title on Dozin' at the Knick is specifically a humorous jab at tape traders who affixed a formal title to a loose musical structure which the band themselves never, apparently, named even obliquely or even referred to verbally. They would simply end up landing on those chords every now and again and would fool with them for awhile.
